Here are some tips and techniques to get you off on the right foot if you want to try walleye fishing.
If you have eaten walleye, you will know that they are a very tasty variety of fish; regrettably It’s a sad state of affairs when one of the most productive spots in the world for fishing for walleye has come into disrepute due to the fear that the water isn’t safe. This is what has happened at Lake Erie. At one time, the EPA recommended that you don’t eat walleyes from Lake Erie more than once per month. Not long ago this was changed to once per week, but these warnings might make some people hesitate before eating any at all. And so, don’t eat any walleye you catch in Lake Erie before finding out from the local Health Department if you can safely eat them. You should never eat raw fish from any body of water, even unpolluted ones, as they may contain harmful parasites.
If your goal is to hook some big walleye, you should plan to go fishing in the evening. The larger female walleye can be found closer to the shore in the evenings as they search for minnows, or take care of their spawning beds. So, if you can troll very slowly along the banks where the females will be lurking, you stand a better chance of landing a large female. Watch along the shoreline or banks for patches of weeds. This is a favored habitat for walleye. Female walleye can be as large as 12 pounds, though most fishers would be happy to land one that’s 10 pounds. If you will only be satisfied by bringing home a prize walleye, than make your plans to do some night fishing. That’s the optimum time to find these trophies.
Taking into account that walleyes prefer grassy areas; this will be your best bet in catching them. When the temperatures are high, the walleyes can be found hanging out in the weedy areas where it is a little less warm. One strategic measure is to use a spinner on the weeds, because walleyes are known for getting other fish from underneath. The movement of the spinner blade will capture their interest; plus using live bait or plastic will entice them into biting. There are tons of different baits to try, for instance, crank bait or jigs with live or plastic bait on their tips.
